Why Watch Size Matters

A luxury watch can be the perfect reference, the perfect condition, and the perfect price — but if it does not fit your wrist properly, it will never feel right. Watch sizing is one of the most overlooked aspects of buying a timepiece, yet it is one of the most important. A watch that is too large looks awkward and uncomfortable; a watch that is too small can look underwhelming and out of proportion.

How to Measure Your Wrist Size

Before you start shopping, you need to know your wrist circumference. Here are two simple methods:

Method 1: Flexible Tape Measure

Wrap a flexible tape measure around your wrist just below the wrist bone (where you would normally wear a watch)
Pull it snug but not tight — you should be able to fit a finger underneath
Read the measurement in centimetres or inches

Method 2: Strip of Paper

Cut a strip of paper about 1cm wide and 25cm long
Wrap it around your wrist at the same position
Mark where the paper overlaps
Lay the paper flat and measure the distance from the end to your mark

Understanding Watch Dimensions

There are four key measurements that determine how a watch wears on your wrist:

Case Diameter

This is the width of the watch face, measured from side to side (excluding the crown). It is the most commonly referenced dimension. Here is a general guide:

Case Thickness

Thickness (or height) is how far the watch protrudes from your wrist. This is often more important than diameter for day-to-day comfort:

Under 10 mm: Ultra-thin, slides easily under shirt cuffs. Examples: Patek Philippe Calatrava, Piaget Altiplano
10 - 12 mm: Comfortable for most situations. Examples: Rolex Datejust (11.8mm), Omega Speedmaster (13.1mm)
12 - 14 mm: Noticeable on the wrist, sporty feel. Examples: Rolex Submariner (13mm), AP Royal Oak (9.8mm surprisingly thin)
14+ mm: Chunky, makes a statement. Examples: Breitling Navitimer, some Panerai models

Lug-to-Lug Distance

This measurement runs from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug (top to bottom as worn). It determines whether the watch hangs over the edges of your wrist. The lugs should not extend past the edges of your wrist — if they do, the watch is too large.

Rule of thumb: Your lug-to-lug distance should be less than or equal to your wrist width (measure across the top of your wrist with a ruler).

Lug Width

This is the distance between the lugs where the strap or bracelet attaches. It determines which straps will fit your watch. Common lug widths are 18mm, 20mm, and 22mm.

Rolex offers a relatively straightforward size range, and their watches tend to wear true to their stated diameter:

Note: Rolex bracelets (Oyster, Jubilee, President) are adjustable with micro-adjust clasps on most modern models. The Glidelock system on the Submariner allows for fine adjustments of up to 20mm without tools — perfect for wearing over a wetsuit or just getting the ideal fit on a hot Dubai day.

The AP Royal Oak wears surprisingly thin for its diameter thanks to the integrated bracelet design. The Offshore, however, is significantly thicker and chunkier.

Tips for Trying On Watches

Try at different times of day: Wrists swell slightly throughout the day due to temperature and activity. If possible, try on watches in the afternoon when your wrist is at its largest.
Check the lug overhang: Stand in front of a mirror and look at your wrist from above. If the lugs extend past the edges of your wrist, the watch is too large.
Move your wrist: Bend your wrist in all directions. The watch should not dig in, catch on clothing, or feel like it is going to slide off.
Consider the bracelet: Metal bracelets add weight and can make a watch feel larger. Leather or rubber straps create a lighter, more casual feel.
Think about your wardrobe: If you wear dress shirts with button cuffs, a thinner watch (under 12mm) will be more practical. If you mostly wear casual clothing, thickness matters less.
Trust the mirror over the number: A 42mm watch with short lugs can wear smaller than a 40mm watch with long lugs. Always try before you buy.
